Applications for AX Volunteers (40+ Hours) Close: April 15, 2022.

Below are all the departments that Anime Expo offers for you to become a volunteer in! Click on the department name for a brief description. Please note that not all departments may be recruiting. Availability varies from year to year.

Department List

ACCESS CONTROL

To provide courteous and professional customer service and general crowd control to the attendees at Anime Expo. Key duties include line management, information services, and policy enforcement.

ACCOUNTING

To ensure specific accounting policies and procedures are adhered for all financial management and handling on all Point of Sale systems and Cash transactions.

AMV (ANIME MUSIC VIDEO)

To showcase a variety of anime music videos and help execute the official AMV Competition.

ANNEX

To provide quality customer service and support to Annex areas including Portfolio Reviews and Annex exhibitors.

ARTIST ALLEY

Artist Alley volunteers strive to improve artist alley for artist and attendees by providing excellent professionalism throughout the entire experience. Volunteers assist in enforcing policies to ensure the safety of all parties involved, provide excellent customer service with accountability and integrity, as well as create an enjoyable environment for our artists and create memorable experiences.

ATTENDEE VOLUNTEER TEAM

To process volunteers with a commitment of less than 32 hours.

AUTOGRAPHS

To provide quality customer service and support to attendees and Guests of Honor throughout autograph sessions.

AX DANCE

Dedicated to sharing dance related interactive entertainment and programming to attendees.

BACK OF HOUSE

The Back of House department is responsible for creating a positive environment for guests who are backstage in the Main Events Hall. In addition to hosting the guests backstage, the team will maintain the dressing rooms, and assist with rider requests. They may be asked to assist with stage set up for panels too.

BUTLER CAFÉ

To provide a recreation of a Butler Café through interactions and performances that are inspired by popular Japanese themed cafes.

CHARITY AUCTION

The Charity Auction team ensures a smooth operation by properly logging auction item donations, manning the booth, assisting with regulations/registration forms, overseeing the auction room, and helping with set-up/break down of the event.

COSPLAY

Distribution of repair items to Attendees who may have broken or ripped their costume, while being available for guidance questions and customer service. Maintaining order in the Cosplay Photo Set area. Place gathering site numbers on Cosplay Gathering areas.

eGAMING

To provide a fun and safe place for attendees to enjoy all forms of electronic gaming.

EVENT OPERATIONS

In charge of assisting all participants of Anime Expo with any general inquiries. Key responsibilities include: filling out and logging incident reports, facilitating with any medical or security emergency, and supporting anyone with ADA needs.

EXHIBIT HALL

To provide excellent customer service and enforces policies that ensure the safety of all attendees in the Exhibit Hall. Duties during the convention may include: traffic flow, resolving disputes, reporting incidents, and facilitating infringement cases.

FASHION SHOW

The Fashion Show team is responsible for the coordination of the AX Fashion Show. This includes everything from pre-con preparations, on-site working with models, to event production/backstage interaction with the Fashion Show Coordinator, designers, and sometimes guest appearances.

FRONT OF HOUSE

The Front of House department is responsible for creating a positive and engaging environment for attendees and guests who are attending events inside the Main Events Hall. The Front of House team will be ushering, establishing reserved seating areas for clients, assisting with the enforcement of room policies (such as no recording) and helping to distribute sponsor gifts to the attendees, if requested.

GAMESHOWS

To provide attendees the chance to experience Anime Expo as part of the show and to encourage audience participation within the AX community with anime inspired gameshows.

GUEST GUIDES

Guest Guides work in teams of at least two to escort Guests of Honor and Talent all throughout the convention.

GR OPERATIONS

To provide accurate, real-time locations and information regarding all Guests of Honor and Talent, while documenting all guest movement throughout Anime Expo and overseeing all internal communications. GR Ops is the brain of GR!

HANDLERS

Handlers are Anime Expo’s Guests of Honors’ and Talents’ personal guides for the whole convention! They help the guests stay on schedule and make schedule changes when needed, as well as providing them with important information about the show so that guests can fulfill their participation and have a great time

HOSPITALITY

To provide quality meals and beverages to Guests of Honor (GoHs), as well as maintain a clean, comfortable space for GoHs to relax during their downtime at Anime Expo.

INDUSTRY LIAISONS

The Industry Liaisons and Press Relations department oversees the Industry Lounge, Press Lounge, press interview room schedule, and answers basic questions from press & industry members, facilitates approved industry requests, and escalates all other questions to the appropriate parties.

INFORMATION SERVICES

Info Services provides on-site information about all AX activities during the Anime Expo Convention. Other responsibilities include serving as an indirect liaison for complaints, YPP and Safespace situations.

The department Will also oversee the Premier Fan Lounge to provide the Ultimate Experience service for our Premier Fan members.

KARAOKE

To create dynamic, fun, and engaging musical events and provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space to those who love music.

LOGISTICS

The Logistics department provides services such as pallet and inventory management to other departments and assist with the setup of the AX Archives booth.

LOUNGE 21 & BEER GARDEN

To provide attendees, over the age of 21, with unique experiences that entails anime-themed events or musical acts within a safe bar/lounge setting.

MAID CAFÉ

To provide a recreation of a Maid Cafe through interactions and performances that are inspired by popular Japanese themed cafes.

MANGA & QUIET LOUNGE

The Manga Lounge and Quiet Lounge Department oversees the curation and execution of services related to a Manga Café or a Quiet Zone where attendees can rest during the convention.

MASQUERADE

Assisting with facilitation of the Masquerade contest. Providing support to competitors pre-con and at con. General backstage management and on-stage striking between performers.

PHOTOGRAPHY & MEDIA MANAGEMENT

To capture photos during Anime Expo according to assigned photography goals and photo style guidelines. Sort and edit photos for web and print use. Responsible in collecting, processing, and organizing all Anime Expo generated photos and video media, as well as distributing captured photos to other departments requiring b-roll images.

PROGRAMMING

The Programming department manages and operates all technical equipment in the Programming rooms. In addition to room preparation, they work with industry members and guests to present premieres and panels. The Programming team will be assisting clients, guests, and attendees with everything from technical assistance, to ushering, and assisting with the enforcement of room policies.

PRODUCTION SUPPORT

The Production Support department’s primary role is providing support to internal events by executing various event-based tasks. Some examples of assistance include the Charity Auction, equipment handling for Fashion Show, set changes in Main Events hall, and procuring supplies when requested.

PROJECT ANIME

Registering Project Anime attendees, ushering during panels, reception desk duties at the Project Anime Lounge, assist in quality panel support, provide tours to Project Anime attendees through Anime Expo to give a behind-the-scenes look at how the event is run.

QUALITY CONTROL

To ensure the quality and fulfillment of sponsorship activations, wayfinding, and room layouts as well as ensuring the proper activation of safe spaces to support SPJA’s Youth Protection Policy.

REGISTRATION

To ensure the registration process is conducted with professionalism for general attendees, exhibitors, artist alley participants, press and industry. Duties during the convention may include: sales, cashing handling, handling badge pick-up, coordinating distribution of swag bags, line control, troubleshooting badge scanning issues, and answering registration inquiries

SOCIAL MEDIA

To assist with monitoring Anime Expo’s digital presence during the event, such as livestream moderation as well as answering inquiries accordingly on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

TABLETOP GAMING

To coordinate events and free play in everything dealing with Tabletop Gaming.

TICKETING

To help oversee the sales & distribution of tickets for Anime Expo’s various ticketed events as well as manage crowd control, line control, check-in at the door and front-of-house issues in the venue. Duties during the convention may include, but is not limited to: sales, cash handling, ticket and giveaway item distribution, inventory control, line and crowd control, answering ticketing inquiries, scanning tickets at the door, and assisting with ushering and seating issues during events.

VOLUNTEER RESOURCES

To offer support to the wellbeing of volunteers with compassion, meticulous documentation, and excellent customer services. Assist with Pre-Con and Post-Con Events.

WORLD COSPLAY SUMMIT (WCS) USA

Assisting with facilitations of the World Cosplay Summit USA Finals. Providing support to competitors pre-con and at con. General backstage management and on-stage striking between performers.

WEAPONS POLICY

Enforcing Anime Expo’s policy on props, prop weapons, and live weapons for all objects that enter convention grounds by providing inspections and denoting approved items with a peace bond.
